A Prayer Prompted by John 4

Heavenly Father,

You reveal your heart toward those that have been set aside by others in the way you sent Jesus directly to this Samaritan woman. He then reveals his heart in the way he gently but directly made himself known to her.

We pray that you would do the same for us and for others that we know – make yourself known in the most personal way that you can. Show us how we might join with you by making you known to those who are marginalized in this world. Help us also to exercise as great a faith as the official with the dying son.

Help us to put in the same amount of effort to get close to Jesus – the kind that would walk a full day to see him if needed. And help us to be willing to trust you even when we do not see the immediate answers to our prayers. You can be at work whether we see it or not.

In Christ,

Amen

A Prayer Prompted by Luke 15

Heavenly Father,

We have sinned against you and are not worthy to be called your children.  Yet that is what you call us once we put our faith in Christ.  Thank you for receiving us into your family.  Thank you for receiving us, like lost sheep, back into the fold.

We thank you further for seeking us out as the shepherd would seek the lost sheep or the woman would seek the lost coin in the parables.  You show us how much you value us that you did not leave us in our lost state, but sought us out so that we might turn to you.

Help us to appreciate the joy that fills heaven over each sinner that repents.  Help us to share that same joy.  Help us, now that we are walking with you, to be among those who join you in bringing other lost sheep back into the fold.  We know that there are many other prodigals much like ourselves who need to return to you.

Please give us the privilege of seeing the lost found and returning to you.

In Christ,
Amen

A Prayer Prompted by Luke 10

Father in Heaven,

Thank you for revealing yourself to us even though we are not the great, mighty or wise of this world. If the last will be first, and so on, then we are happy to take the lower place now if it means that we get to know you.

As Jesus tells us, the harvest is large and the laborers are few. We pray earnestly that you would send laborers into your harvest.

Like the seventy-two, we can see that all of us can play a part in the task of mission. Help us to receive you sincerely knowing that we also need to be ready to be sent.

And then help us to be ready to serve our neighbor in need, no matter who that neighbor is.

Finally, make us the kind of people who will listen to and learn from Jesus. Even as we serve, we never want our work to somehow stand in the way of our relationship with him.

In Christ,

Amen.

A Prayer Prompted by Luke 5

Father in Heaven,

We thank you that Jesus did not come to call the righteous, but rather sinners in need of repentance.  If you were looking for righteous people, you would never have chosen us.

We now ask you for your forgiveness, healing, cleansing and complete transformation.  We want to know that we are new creatures in Christ.

And then, just like those earliest disciples, we want to be used by you to draw others into a relationship with Jesus. We ask that you would help us to “fish for people.”  Like Levi’s friends, let us have the blessing of seeing our friends and family come to know you.

We know that we come to you as sinners, but that you have the ability to make us saints. Make us holy, please.

In Christ,

Amen.
