Palmer St. Podcast: Romans 11

God has made wonderful promises to Israel. What could happen if those promises go unfulfilled?

  •  It would prove that God’s word was not true.
  • It would prove that God could not be relied upon – that He was not worthy of our trust or faith.
  • It would give you the right to think that since God gave up on Israel, His elect, His chosen, His beloved, then just maybe, He would also give up on you.

But, God isn’t finished with Israel and He still isn’t finished with you.

Israel, Turkey and Iran

Those interested in Bible prophecy might be intrigued by an article in the Jerusalem Post from Thursday, February 19, 2009.   It points out a noticeable shift in political focus in Turkey, which has in the past been very western-leaning, but now has an Islamist-led government.

The connection with Bible prophecy is found in Ezekiel 38, where a coalition is formed to attack Israel led by “Rosh” (Russia), but including Persia (Iran) and Gomer (Turkey).  This coalition is destined to fail.

For anyone wanting additional information or explanation about Ezekiel 38-39, I’m including a link to my own notes.  These were written in July of 2005, when we were studying Ezekiel at Horizon Central.

Finally, there is also a link to a 2005 article from the Middle East Forum, expressing doubt as to whether Turkey can maintain its pro-western tilt.

Knowing How to Calm Down

There are times when our striving over a thing reaches its proper limits.  When this happens we need to know how to quietly trust in the Lord.  That unanswered prayer, that stressful situation, that massive uncertainty we have in an area that we feel we ought to understand better – all these may be areas we need to deliberately give over to Him.

David understood this and offers his own example to us in a brief psalm.  He intentionally calmed and quieted his soul, knowing that some things needed to be placed in God’s hands and left there.  There is a beautiful peace and humility involved in this kind of intentional trust.

Psalm 131

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

1  Lord, my heart is not haughty,
Nor my eyes lofty [or “arrogant”].
Neither do I concern myself with great matters,
Nor with things too profound [or “difficult”] for me.

2  Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul,
     Like a weaned child with his mother;
Like a weaned child is my soul within me.

3  O Israel, hope in the Lord
From this time forth and forever.
